How To Check Gmail Without Internet Connection
Yes you read it right, you can access your Gmail from you desktop without having internet connection, that is you can read your mails in offline mode. This feature is available under Google Labs and the software that you will require to use is Google Gears.
This is more like your popular Email Clients like Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird. All your incoming mails will be automatically getting stored in your computer’s hard drive.
Let me tell what you all need to do enable this feature.
1. Go To Gmail > Settings > Labs
2. Click on Enable.
3. Save Changes.
4. Once you save the changes you will a the following icon on the top.
5. A pop up will come which will ask you for “Install offline access for Gmail”, once your click on install it will Install the Google Gears on your system for accessing the emails offline.
6. After installation is done you can restart the browser and log back in to your Gmail Account , now you will asked whether you want Gmail to store messages on your computer. Check “I trust this site” and click Allow as shown below.
You will also be given an opportunity to create shortcuts for Offline Gmail as shown below, you can select desktop a shortcut on desktop will be created on the desktop once the synchronization is done.
7. Offline Gmail will now be getting installed and will start storing your messages on your computer. This process can take some time depending on the size of your inbox and attachments that you are having. Even if you are interrupted because of down connection or some other reason ,downloading process will resume when you log back into Gmail.
Following screen will be shown.
Once the download is complete you can access your mails offline by the shortcut your selected earlier or by typing in gmail.com in your browser in both the cases you will get the following screen, where you can enter your mail id and access the mail offline.
Enter the email id and click on Offline -Sign in button and you would be presented with all the mails without having internet connection.

.

Kick-ass tip, it is so useful for users with unstable internet connection. If you find a trick to do the same to Google Reader, please tell us.
Sure.

Yeah, ofcourse it is possible.
Hey Ruchi, thank you for this great information. I did not know about it before.
Glad it is useful for you.
This is great! Looks easy to do the steps, too. I prefer it to be on my desktop.
It is really easy and useful. Try it.:)
I prefer using an email client. Totally addicted to Thunderbird (email) + Lightning (for calendar) setup. I can sync the calendar with Google Calendar service. I fetch mails using IMAP, so that I can also read them using my symbian device. I don’t really prefer using Gears on a full time basis. Nevertheless, I like the idea of Gears. Especially, the way it’s implemented in WordPress’s back-end Dashboard. Simply love it!
Yeah Tilak you are right that Thunderbird is really fast and quite easy to use, but gears provides us with offline facility, thanks for your inputs.
Truly i didnt know about this option, nice tutorial as usual :d
I am glad that you liked it, give it a try it will really be helpful in case of bad internet connection.
Mail clients like Thunderbird are also helpful in this regard
Yeah I agree with you.
Good find, are there any advantages in this product compared to Outlook?
Outlook is very rich in functions, but you can have consistent interface of online and offline Gmail.
Really its great, I can able to check my mail when internet connection is not available.
I am glad it worked using this tutorial.
Hi,
I’m afraid your tip is just the opposite of ‘how to check gmail without internet connection’. Having google gears installed absolutely does not let you ‘check gmain without an internet connection’. It lets you view emails that were downloaded whilst you had a working connection, but it doesn’t let you check for new mails whilst disconnected.
Beyond that, thanks for the gesture of wanting to share knowledge, and well done for provision of a clear description.
I am Glad you liked the post.
I agree with John Samuel. Indeed, Thunderbird has an option similar to Google Gears, that allows you to download all the emails from a specific email account before going to “offline mode”.
Anyway, this is a good tip for those who preffer Gmail over a Mail Client.
Regards.
Thanks for sharing your views.
I have tried this some weeks back ..It’s really a cool feature!
