Domain name represents your website and thus it is important that you should be cautious while choosing the domain name. While choosing domain name you must be aware of some myths which are rumored by people and thus new bloggers get confused.
Here are few myths which you must keep in your mind before choosing domain name for your blog:
1. You should only register domain through .com version: Many newbie’s and bloggers think that it is only worth to have domain name with .com version. But this is a total myth. There are so many blogs that have .net, .org, .uk version domain name and then also have good search engine ranking and good PR. They are successful bloggers. 2. Once I have registered the domain name, no one else can use it forever: You can only keep your domain name with you if you don’t forget to register it again and again in coming years or if you don’t fall in trademark trap. If you forget to renew your domain name each year than it can be registered by someone else also. You need to keep track on trademark disputes to avoid losing your domain name.
3. You can easily modify your existing domain name: Once you registered with a domain name for your blog, it’s not easy to modify domain name. You will need to pay lot of money to change the domain name. Internet service provider need to change many information on sever and your domain name listing must also be changed in search engines which is very tough task and time consuming.
4. Dashes can’t be used in Domain names: It is a total myth; bloggers avoid using dashes in their domain name because it becomes hard to remember. It totally depends on individual wish that he have to add dashes in his blog’s domain name or not.
People think that there is no big task in registering for a domain name but there are above myths associated with domain name, thus all beginners should keep this myths in mind and should not carried away with rumors.

Glad you like it Sandesh.
Not sure I would call *all* of them for myths, but nevertheless, some good information for the newbies and I’m sure everybody has had those doubts sooner or later
I hope this article can be helpful for beginners, because even I faced problems while selecting domain names.
Not able to use dashes is among the very common myth in the minds of people. Thanks for bringing it to notice of everyone.
Welcome Tech-freak Stuff.
Thanks ruchi.
I was unaware of the fact that dashes can’t be used.
Yeah , Many of them are not aware of this fact.
Nice set of myths you’ve broken…
Tell me , how much do .info domain names cost…. i’ve heard $1 , is that true?
Thanks, Sandeep it depends on Web Hosting Company. Like Go Daddy is charging $0.89 and some are charging $0.99.
Nice article! Domain name is important to a website, but now I think that it is too hard to find a good domain name with .com, short domain names have already been used by others, the rest are often too long, every time when I was choosing a domain name, I have to spend a lot of time and try a lot, it is just like choosing a girl friend
.
That’s true , Choosing a domain name of your choice is very tough and Domain Name represents you online. Same as Girl Friend
.
Domain name renewal is most important thing. So, renew you domain name for few years at least.
Agree with you Rahul, We must remember for renewing our domain name regularly.
never heard of dashes can be use on comment, it just plain funny..haha
.com era almost over, everyone simply have it.. .us,.net,.org,.info,.ws,.cc and all other can be use without any disadvantage whatsoever.
Yeah, many website with .net or .Uk or .in extension are having good PR. In fact, I would say if you have to attract visitors of your country and sell your products to them then you should choose domain name with extension of your country like .IN or .UK .
Is there any myth like.. we should not register lengthy domain names?
Yeah, Many people prefer to have small domain name and for that they waste many days or months.
Yes all are some domain name myth. Ruchi I want to ask you that if I change my blogspot blog to custom domain, what it effect on my SERP and google PR?
See Custom domain is always best and if you properly do redirection of your blogspot to you new domain you would not loose much PR.
Somebody say me to use 301 redirect, but I want to know that is my new domain will index by search engine?
I’ve one hyphen (dash) in my .com domain name. No issues at all. I guess you can’t get a meaningful domain name in .com without a hyphen. Every possible dictionary word in .com name is exhausted! It took me almost a week’s frantic search before I finalized my current domain name.
Great and you are also doing good. Not choosing hyphen is just a myth.
Hi ruchi
I m really impressed by ur alexa ranking…
u have also got ggl sitelinks… and all these in short span of time..
Can u reveal the secrets of these
Oh there is nothing like that. Even I am not satisfied yet with ranking ( google or Alexa) . Trying to achieve goals.
i registered my domain with .net extention . what to do now
Don’t worry dude
As you see problogger was also before problogger.net but now he has owned .com also .
Never lose anything that you have instead make use of it wisely
Yeah Ravi, Don’t worry about .Net. Other things like quality and theme is more important to get success in blogging.
.
@ Sunny, Thanks for Replying.
Good post Ruchi, i like all the point you covered i am not aware of such point thanks for sharing.
Glad you liked.
Nice tips Ruchi. In my belief, .org and .net are the most misused TLDs however they can work as secondary options. As much as possible, one should go for a natural high volume search phrase name with a .com extension. Also, these days it matters how people search (e.g. autofill in Google) and that should be a criteria for selecting the second or third words in a search phrase as well.
.in, .uk are good options if you have country specific blogging/sites in mind. If that’s not the case, you have to explicitly set geo targeting from Google Webmaster tools.
You highlighted good points, Glad you liked the tips .
Good post writer! The domain myths that you’ve listed in your post are the most prevalent ones among users. I currently own 5 domains, all purchased from LimeDomains.
Thanks,Brian. 5 domains, cool . Keep rocking
.
few days back i was registering my 3rd domain and was confused on it as .com was not available and .com alternate domain was available but was with ‘-’ (dash)
whihc wud u recommend ? having a domain with .net ? or having alternate domain with a ‘-’ (dash) .com domain ?
really confused on it
Don’t get too confused, As I mentioned earlier that quality or blog matters , thus choose any name or extension which suits your blog contents and you find easy to remember.
Good post Ruchi, Well im a victim of the first point. I ignored a .org domain as I thought people may forget and put .com . so ignored that name and bought domain in another .com account
Oh that’s bad you have to pay for two domains. Glad you liked the post.
yeah, u are right ruchi.. so i took http://techvilla.org even there is techvilla.org & techvilla.info
